System integration is one of the newest things that has come down in price and up in quality in the industry.
Many systems can now be controlled by a common interface. This allows you to access many different systems from one or more point such as a touch screen.
The various systems themselves can also be pulled together to act as one.
An example of this is:
Action
Response
Hold your card up to the card reader
Front door unlocks.
Burglar alarm disarms.
The all the thermostats in the house go to preset temps.
The radio starts up throughout the house.
The lights go to the " I'M HOME " scene, dimming as previously setup.
A text message is sent out to a parent.
Action
Response
Push a virtual button on a touch screen.
Burglar alarm bypasses the garage door to the house.
Burglar alarm bypasses the over head garage door.
Garage door goes up.
Driveway light comes on.
Virtual button on touch screen illuminates showing the door is up.
Push the virtual button again.
Garage door goes down.
Driveway light goes off.
Burglar alarm restores the garage door to the house into the system.
Burglar alarm restores the over head garage door into the system.
The lighted virtual button on the touch screen extinguishes showing that the door is fully down.
These ACTION / RESPONSE scenarios are only the tip of the iceberg. Almost any sequence can be set up to meet your needs. The hardest part is thinking up ways to have system integration help you.
jeff 2.0 can execute your ideas. We only have to dream them up.

Touch screens are a benefit because they can display several systems front ends (GUI's) from one small location.
Rather than having 10 different keypads all over the place. A touch screen consolidates everything in one place.
